![]() While Maiden of Black Water is near expert in its slow build, always offering many questions to ask and mysteries to solve, it takes a little too much comfort in this method. What could it all mean?Īll of that makes for an intriguing premise. Miu, originally around in-game to assist Yuri, soon sees visions of her mother. Maidens of a past life have taken hold of the mountain, suggesting they are the very reason for the many that have taken their lives in this eerie environment. Stated over many generations to be the place people go to take their own lives, its intrigue and dark history is clearly inspired by the real-life Aokigahara.Įach on the hunt for their own answers within the mountain, such as Ren’s research for his latest book, our heroes will happen upon many a spirit or twist and turn that’ll challenge their path. All their stories interconnect, crossing paths and all coming back to one key sharing factor: the eerie fictional mountain known as Mt Hikami. These are Yuri Kozukata, a young woman with ethereal powers that link to the dark world, Ren Hoji, an author and friend of Yuri, and lastly Miu Hinasaki, a link to the earlier games, being the daughter of previous protagonist Miku. Maiden of Black Water situates the player in control of three protagonists. In theory, it too is a good testing ground for whether a series return is worth it. This may not be the prime entry fans were after a remaster of, but it was a welcome enough onboarding for me as a series newcomer. Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water is a remastered port of the 2014 Wii U game, now available on current-gen consoles and PC. Undoubtedly having its dedicated fans, it hasn’t exactly prospered in recent years like Resident Evil nor is there loud begging for its return, like the more prolific and absent Silent Hill series. That said, Kikuchi clarified that making a new Fatal Frame game wouldn't be so easy at this moment for his team, but in the long run, they could handle it.Ībove, you can check out a few minutes of Project Zero: Maiden of Black Water gameplay, which is the last entry of the franchise.Long on ice for several years, Project Zero (or Fatal Frame as it may better be known in other localisations) as a series is a bit of a dark horse in the horror space. However, this wouldn't be achieved until Nintendo shows interest in the project. Kikuchi revealed that he would love to bring a new title of the series to Switch in North America along with the official Fatal Frame movie that will be coming to Hollywood in the near future. Speaking to Nintendo Everything, Keisuke Kikuchi, the producer of the series, talked about the possibility of reviving Project Zero, but made it clear that "there is a distance between feelings and ambitions and the feasibility of such projects." ![]() ![]() Now that Switch has become a record-breaking console for Nintendo a few years after its launch, it might be a feasible request from fans to return the Fatal Frame franchise with a new title or a remaster of the trilogy. Having said that, under Nintendo's management, the franchise is still breathing and the last entry of it released five years ago as a Wii U exclusive, though it wasn't a successful game. Plus, some of the new iterations, including the remake of Fatal Frame 2: Crimson Butterfly, never launched in North America. Unfortunately, since the time Nintendo gained the publishing rights for the franchise, it hasn't received many new entries. The original trilogy of Fatal Frame that was launched between 20, brought a lot of attention to Koei Tecmo's survival horror series. While Konami officially denied developing of any Silent Hill-related games, the producer behind the Fatal Frame franchise seems very interested in returning the series, though he says Nintendo is the one who should make the decision. Heading back to the sixth generation of consoles, Silent Hill and Fatal Frame, aka Project Zero, were two big rivals in bringing haunting story-driven horror experiences in their own ways, but none of them could make it out alive to the current generation.
